1 Day Left!

"No matter how my story ends, I know that I left the world a better place than I found it.  One person might be saved because I walked, because I lived, because I raised that money, and that is the greatest achievement that any of us can hope for from our lifetimes."  Bridget Spence

My 3rd 3-Day Journey starts tomorrow after school as I attend the Opening/Closing Ceremony Rehearsal.  Then up early Friday morning to begin the walk.  I am so blessed to have had the opportunity to walk the last 3 years.  I never dreamed that walking in 2011 would lead me here, 180 miles later and over $7000 raised.  From walking alone to walking with a team of 10 (7 walkers and 3 crew).  I couldn't be more proud of my team, Angels of Hope.  I love you ladies and I can't wait to celebrate, remember, and spread awareness with you this weekend.  I am so ready to laugh and cry with you.  My prayer is that we have made a difference, that lives will be saved, and people have been made aware.

I couldn't do this without some very special people!  Yes, I couldn't walk without those who have donated, prayed, encouraged, and supported me for 3 years.  Thank you for helping me honor my mother and I too am honored to walk for you and your loved ones!  Also, my family, Scott Rains, Wesley, and Graham.  Thank you for letting me participate and sharing this experience with me.  Thank you to my inspiration and my biggest fans, Mom and Dad (Jeffrey Sauls and Debbie Sauls), I love you more than words can say!  Thank you to Ryan Roth and Travis Williams, 60 miles would not be physically possible without your training and encouragement!

Please remember the walkers and crew in your prayers this weekend.  I am beyond blessed to have amazing friends and family like you!!

Why I am walking in 2013...

As the 3-Day draws near, I reflect back on why I started this journey 3 years ago and why I am continuing on today.  In 2011, I wanted to do something bold to help spread awareness and to help find a cure for breast cancer.  I chose to walk in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day to honor the life of my mother and to help her celebrate being 25 years free from cancer.  Breast Cancer has touched too many lives!  My prayer is that one day God will provide us a cure so that no one else has to fight for their lives.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!  Please help to make others aware!  Early detection can save a life!  A life like my Mom's.  I am so blessed to have the opportunity to participate in the 3-Day.  I couldn't do this without my family, friends, and donors.  Thank you for your donation, your support, and your prayers!

As I walk 60 Miles this weekend (rain or shine) I will remember each and every survivor, each and every one who has lost their battle, and each and every donor.  May God Bless You All. I love you and I walk for you!

Clips from the 2012 Closing Ceremony

Here's  a short clip from the 2012 SGK 3-Day Closing Ceremony.  I was so honored to have my kids join me on stage.  Not just Wesley and Graham, but Wesley carried the names of my 450 HMES students.  Graham was so scarred to be on the stage in front of so many, but he did it and got a special prize from the stage manager, a 3-Day key chain.  He then told me he needed a car with keys to go with his new key chain.  :)

Clips from the 2012 SGK 3-Day Opening Ceremony

The 2013 Susan G. Komen 3-Day is just 9 days away!!  I am so excited to be participating for a 3rd year!!  The video above is some clips from last year's Opening Ceremony (2012).  Sorry so much of it is the back of my head.  I have heard the words to the Opening Ceremony so many times, but it still brings tears to my eyes listening to it.  Hope you enjoy!!  Step by step we are moving closer to a cure!!

My Exciting 3-Day Announcement!!!!

Last year, I was asked to carry a flag at the Opening and Closing Ceremony for the 2012 Atlanta 3-Day for the Cure.  I was so excited!!  It was such an honor to be chosen from so many walkers to carry a flag and be an actual part of such a special ceremony.  I was chosen to carry one of the Honor Flags.  An Honor Flag is a flag in honor of an individual.  The flag I was chosen to carry was the flag that said, for "My Children."  This was a perfect flag for me.  I walk for a future without breast cancer.  I walk so my children do not have to face this terrible disease.  It was so special to carry the flag, not just for Wesley and Graham, but for my school children...my students past, present, and future.  My students know that I walk and have participated in a Pink Out Day for me the past two years at school.  They have made me cards, mailed post cards, and even made a giant banner that they all signed.  They ask me questions, worry about where I'm sleeping and if I'm eating while I walk, and they always ask if they can come with me.  At the closing ceremony, my personal children Wesley and Graham were invited to come on the stage with me to represent loved ones who supported and cheered for the walkers every step of the way.  Since my students wanted to come too, and I couldn't bring all 450 of them, I made a pink poster and they all signed it.  Wesley carried it up on the stage so that they too could stand with us.  Such a special moment.  One I'll never forget!  I never imaged that anything could top that moment, until last week.  That my friends leads me to my exciting 3-Day Announcement!!!

The things you do for yourself are gone when you are gone, but the things you do for others remain your legacy.  Kalu Ndukwe Kalu

Last week, I was asked to participate once again in this year's (2013) Opening and Closing Ceremony.  Again, I was asked to carry an Honor Flag.  I couldn't believe I was selected two years in a row...amazing!  I really didn't think the experience could get any better than last years experience, but each year gets better and better.  I am so excited I can't stand it!!!  This year, I will proudly carry the flag that says, for "My Mother."  As I got the news, I immediately called my Mom and we both cried.  I got to hold the flag and get a picture back during the 2011 and 2012 events.

2011

2012

I never thought I would be chosen out of so many.  So many have lost their mothers, so many mothers are fighting.  I am so blessed.  Thank you Lord for seeing fit for my Mom to be called a Survivor.  Thank you for allowing her to be here to participate and help so many women who have needed her.  She has touched so many lives during her journey before, during, and after breast cancer.  She is so strong, she put this frightening time in God's hands, and He delivered her.  He is so faithful to His children and always keeps His promises.  She didn't stop after the battle was won.  She gave.  She gave back to the community, sharing her story and giving hope to other fighters and survivors.  I am so honored to carry this flag for you, Mom!  I will not only carry it for her, but the other Mothers who weren't as lucky as she.  I will carry it for the Mother's who are fighting right now and the ones who will fight in the future.  I will carry this flag for all daughters who have watched their Mom's fight the battle, win or lose.  I will carry this flag for all of the names listed on my ribbons on my back pack, because they are/were all mother's too.

The story doesn't stop here.  This year, they have changed the Opening Ceremony a little, not only will I carry the flag, but I have been one of the 6 participants chosen to say a short speech about who I am carrying the flag for...I'm not going to share my speech now.  I hope you'll come back in a few months to read it or watch video of the ceremony.  You are even welcome to come experience the Opening Ceremony for yourself.  I can't wait for October!  I can't wait to walk 60 Miles with my Angels of Hope, new friends, and old friends.  I can't wait to experience the faith, hope, and love of  the 3-Day Community.  I can't wait to cross that stage and celebrate the life of my Mother.

Thank you again to all who have made this experience possible!  Thank you for your donation, prayers, support, and encouragement.  I am so close to reaching my goal.  I still need about $600 in order to walk this year's event.  Please help me get there by making a donation.  No donation is too big or small and it's all tax deductible.  This cause is so important to me.  If you can help click here to get to my fundraising page.  I have been so blessed by this experience of helping others.  I want to do all I can to make a difference in this world.  Like sweet Bridget Spence said, "I know that I will leave the world a better place than I found it.  One person might be saved because I walked, because I lived, because I raised that money, and that is the greatest achievement that any of us can hope for from our lifetimes."  I am a part of something big.  I am a child of God and it's my prayer that He uses me to share His love and hope.  I want to leave a legacy that points to Him.  I am proud that walking in the 3-Day, raising money and awareness for the cause, and most importantly sharing God's love and hope by giving and helping others are all part of my legacy.

I pray that my journey has touched your heart in some way and will continue to do so.  I have learned and have grown as person with every step.  My life has been touched by so many stories and new friendships made.  I pray that it has helped you be more aware.  As Breast Cancer Awareness Month approaches, remember to see your doctor, get checked, and get a mammogram.

Packing for the 3-Day...Part 2

Alright now it's time to pack!  What do I bring and how do I pack it?  Well, you should first look at the packing list located in your participant center.  On the list is everything the 3-Day suggests for you to bring.  Remember that you are only allowed one gear bag that cannot weigh more than 35lbs.  This is to protect the crew members who have volunteered to load and unload every one's bags on and off the big trucks.  Everything that you plan on taking must be in this bag!!  If you are like me, I was thinking that's gonna be impossible!!  But, it's not!!  I have been able to take everything I need the last two years in my one bag.

There it is!! My one bag.  Beside it is my Camelbak that I wear as I walk.  I also wore the wings last year to support my team, Angels of Hope.  I purchased this particular bag at Target.  It is a large duffel bag with wheels.  I chose blue because well, everything is pink.  I chose blue so it would stand out and I could find it easily amongst the thousands of other bags.  Also, I tied pink ribbons on it.  You must label your bag with your participant ID # and tent address.  It is suggested by the 3-Day to pack everything inside your bag in Ziploc bags.  It helps keep you organized and keeps the items inside dry in case of rain.  (Remember this event is rain or shine.)  I do pack my thing in the Ziploc bags and label them, day 2, day 3, etc.  That way it's easy to pick up bag and take the items to the shower trucks.

Here's what's in the Bag!!

Tennis Shoes

I wear one pair and pack another pair.  I alternate them to help prevent blisters.  Also, if it does rain, you don't want to walk in wet shoes.  If there is a chance of rain...pack a couple of sheets of newspaper.  I have heard that it will help dry out wet shoes.

Day 2 & 3 Attire

I pack each day in a Ziploc bag.  I include sports bra, underwear, socks (2 pair per day), shorts, capri pants, tank, and t-shirt.  Yes, you can fit it all in one large Ziploc bag.

PJ's

I pack a t-shirt and PJ pants and PJ shorts.  You don't know what the temp will be like where you are camping.

Extra Items

I usually pack a sweat shirt, fleece jacket, hat, sunglasses, and visor.  If there is a chance of rain, I will pack a rain jacket.  If there is not a chance of rain, I will pack a $1 poncho just in case...you never know!!!

Sleeping Equipment

I have done the sleeping bag and the air mattress.  I recommend the air mattress.  (Yes, it's in that bag!)  If you go with the air mattress I suggest getting with your tent mate and one of you pack the mattress and the other packing the sheet and blanket.  Don't forget your battery operated pump and a small pillow!  My air mattress is a Queen size.  The pink tents are 6.5' x 6.5'.  It takes up almost all of the tent.  The 3-Day suggests taking some other things for the tent, but each time I walked we stayed inside the World Congress Center, so we didn't need additional tarps to cover and keep things dry.

Toiletries

You will need sunscreen, toothpaste and brush, shampoo and soap, razor, deodorant, moisturizer, and other feminine products.  Don't forget foot care products too.  You may need nail clippers, small first aid kit, prescribed medications, anti-blister aids, and bandages.  Insect repellent is good too.  I also pack just a little make up, not much.

Miscellaneous Items

Some suggest ear plugs, I have some, but have never wore them.  Alarm clock, I just use my phone. A camera is a must!!!  There are so many things you will want to take picture of and many photo opportunities.

That's it!! That's what's in my blue bag!  :-)

Packing for the 3-Day...Part 1

So I have thought long and hard about this particular post.  It is mainly for my team mates who will be walking for the first time this October.  Others of you just might be curious too.  I get asked all the time...What do you pack for the 3-Day?  Do you have to carry your bag 60 miles?  Do you really camp?  How do you walk 60 miles after sleeping on the ground for 2 nights?  So now, I'll answer your questions here.  Please, remember that the following is my opinion.  What I pack and how I do things may not be what's best for you.  Always pack for your comfort and of course follow the 3-Day guidelines.  I decided to make a couple of post, just because it could get long....

Packing for the first time in 2011
For the 3-Day, you have the option of staying at a hotel (you pay for it) or sleeping at the 3-Day Camp (which is free).  Camp is amazing and I highly recommend staying there!  It's a part of the experience that you don't want to miss.  Just because I know you are wondering...No, you do not have to carry your bag for 60 miles.  At each 3-Day you are assigned a tent address.  Example: B-36  This is the letter row and number you will set up your tent at.  The letter is also your assigned truck.  When you are dropped off at the Opening Ceremonies, you take your bag and check it in with the truck that has your letter on it (truck B).  The truck take your things to camp while you walk the first day.  On the third day, you load your bag back into the truck and it takes your things to the Closing Ceremony.

At most 3-Day events you camp outside.  At the Atlanta event, the last two years, we have camped indoors.

For 2 nights, the above was my home.  How did we sleep on concrete floor?  If you look closely you will see an air mattress.  Yes, it takes up the entire tent, but it sleeps well and you really do need your sleep to be able to walk 20 + or - miles a day!

Camp is one amazing place!  Not only do you sleep there, but you eat breakfast and dinner there too.  You will not go hungry at the 3-Day!!

The above was my dinner on night. They pile it up!!  Camp also, has a store, post office, massage chairs, stretching center, photo booths, remembrance and reflection tent, and more.

Each night there's a camp show.  During the camp show you will sing, dance, laugh, cry, it's so emotional.   Yes, people do dance after walking 20 to 40 miles.  Everyone dances at the Closing Ceremony (yes, that's after 60 miles)!  It is just an emotional experience and the love, joy, and hope of all the people gets you through it!!

This ends part 1!  Come back soon to read part 2!

Fundraising!! Help Me Reach My Goal

We are 6 weeks away from the 3-Day and I still need around $650 to be able to walk.  There is no donation too big or too small.  If you can help, please click here to donate!   I must meet this goal before October 15, to be able to participate.  I'm not worried.  I know my God is faithful and is in this.  This cause is very important to me and I know that God is blessing all my efforts.  Though I am just a small part of this, I know with our efforts combined we are making a big difference in the fight again breast cancer!

I'm also having 2 more fundraisers.  My sweet friend Angie is having a 31 Fundraiser to help me meet my goal.  31 is a company that sales various bags and organizational totes.  These products have additional accessories and can be embroidered.  I love what this company stands for as they strive to encourage and reward others for who they are.  They rely on God and commit to provide women with a fulfilling, enjoyable and rewarding experience one person at a time.  I personally have several of their organizational totes.  They are sturdy, beautiful, and have so many uses.  I love their products and know you will too.  I would love for you to attend my party.  It will be Tuesday, September 10, at 2:45 in my classroom at school.  If you are coming, please email, call, or send me a message.  If you can't attend then you are welcome to shop online.  To purchase online click here

I am lovin' the Pink, Black, & White pattern in the top middle of this picture!

25% of the proceeds will be donated back to my 3-Day Walk Account.

The September Special is...

Spend $35 and get a Organizing Utility Tote for $15 or Super Organizing Tote for $25.

My second fundraiser is with Premier Designs Jewelry!  This company is near and dear to my heart because before I started my teaching career, I too was a jewelry lady.  Again, another amazing company that believes "nothing is more important than service!"  This company's main focus in on people and relationships.  The jewelry line is amazing too.  This is a special fundraiser because the jewelry lady hosting it is my friend Emily who is also participating in the 3-Day walk with me.  This will be her second 3-Day Walk.  Emily is donating 50% of the profits to our 3-Day accounts.

You know you want one of these!!  There's two bracelets here I really want!!

If you are in the Covington area and your interested in purchasing some jewelry to help us reach out goal.  We are having a show on Saturday, September 14, at 6:00 at our church.  Please call, email, message me and I'll give you directions.  If you are interested in purchasing and you are not in my area, please message me and I will tell you how you can place an order.

Not only will you receive an amazing product from either of these two companies, but you will be helping provide awareness and assisting in research towards finding a cure for breast cancer.  Christmas is only a couple months away.  Why not get a jump start on your holiday shopping?

I can't ever thank you enough for your support!  I wouldn't be able to participate in this event without friends and family who support my fundraising efforts and lift me and my team up in prayer.

Thank you for your support!!

It's Mail Time at the 3-Day Post Office!!

After a long 20 miles (or more), there's nothing better than getting to camp and finding mail at the 3-Day Post Office!  Letters with encouraging words help remind you after a tiring day why you signed up to walk 60 miles. The last two years, your letters have brought tears to my eyes and have given me so much motivation and encouragement to keep walking.  I'd love to hear from you this year too!!

Post Cards from Mrs. Jones' 3rd Grade Class!  It was so sweet to have my Superstars cheer me on.
Walking 60 miles in 3 days is not easy...your love and support means so much to me.  Thank you to everyone who wrote me letters and sent words of encouragement last 2 year (some even sent a card for each day).

Here are some suggested ways to support me and my team.  These suggestion are from the 3-Day Website!
  • Write a letter expressing your love and support to your walker, which we’ll deliver to her/him on the event. Getting mail on event can provide a big boost to their spirits. Take a few minutes to write a note which will brighten up their Komen 3-Day experience!
    Send letters to:
Susan G. Komen 3-Day Camp Mail
    ATTN: INSERT NAME OF PARTICIPANT
    P.O. Box 1101
    Woodstock, GA 30188
Envelopes only, please. No boxes or large packages. Mail must be postmarked no later than October 8 in order to ensure delivery at the 3-Day Camp Post Office. Please note: This address is not the actual location of camp, but a PO Box for mail delivery only. Any mail that is not received by the 3-Day® by October 15 or retrieved by the participant by November 4 will be destroyed.
  • Organize a group to host your very own private cheering station. (Contact mhowell@event360.com for more information.) You have the potential to turn any tired 3-Day walker into a happy participant by surprising them at a cheering station!
  • Send your participant sweet dreams with a personal note and a treat. Click here for details.
  • Help raise money. Ask your participant how you can get involved in her/his fundraising plan to help your walker exceed their fundraising goal.

I really appreciate everyone who has made it possible for me to walk the last 3 years!  I have been so blessed to be a part of the 3-Day family and walk.  I am glad that I can do this for my mom and know that my efforts help to promote awareness and save lives!  I am going to close with a quote from a card I received from a sweet lady named Donna during the 2011 Event.  I dream big!  I hope you do too!

Dream higher than a mountain, deeper than the sea, wider than the world - for the size of our dreams tells not how big we are but how big our God is.  Holley Gerth

Me and My Camelbak

Well, there it is...my Camelbak.  I love it and I hate it.  Well, there's more love than hate.  I guess to be honest the problem is not the Camelbak, it's the Camelbak Operator (yep, me).  If you remember back to my first 3-Day, you'll remember day 2.  On day 2, it was cold, sweat shirt cold and I had a bumped up knee.  I stopped at Pit Stop 2 sat my pack down and headed to the restroom.  When I arrived back, I put on the backpack only to soak my back with water.  Not a little, but it went straight through the sweat shirt and t-shirt.  I took it off the pack and notice that it was wet and it was sitting in a puddle of water.  I quickly looked to see if there was a leak and there wasn't.  What happened was I sat the bag on top of the straw and the water came on out while my bag was on the ground creating the puddle and soaking the outside of the bag.  I clean the straw and refilled the water and walked that cold, cold morning with a wet back and pack too.  After that little experience I have been careful not to sit the bag on the straw again.  I love carrying the water on my back during the walks.  It is easy to get a drink of water when needed through the straw and it holds tons of stuff.  You would be surprised what all I can pack into this little bag.  My pack is actually a cyclist pack.  There's even enough room to put a bike helmet in it.  I carry water, foot care items, rain jacket, extra socks, and more in mine.  It is one of the best things that I have bought for my 3-Day journey, only second to my Road Runner socks, Road Runner fitted shoes, and molded insoles.  I haven't had any more trouble (again, it was my fault) with my pack since that day back in 2011.

Well, the other day, we went for a 15 mile training walk at Stone Mountain (trust me, I need water to complete a walk at Stone Mountain, especially for 15 miles).  I double checked as always to make sure that I didn't sit it on the straw.  I was ready to walk.  I got out of my car, put the pack on my back and then I felt it... yep, water.  I thought maybe it was dripping from the car door, but it hadn't rained!  I looked in the floor of my car and there was NOT a puddle of water.  I quickly took off the bag...too late, my back was wet.  I unzipped the pack and the section that holds the water bladder was filled with water, there was hardly any water left in the bladder of the bag.  This time, I didn't put the lid on good when I filled it with water.  On a good note, my stuff inside the bag (other compartments) was totally dry!  I refilled the water, put the lid on tight, and walked on.  Lucky for me it was a hot morning so a wet back wasn't so bad after all.  Lesson learned...I will always double check to make sure the lid is tight and watch where I sit it.  :-)

Again, it's one of the best things I have purchased!  I really prefer it over the fanny pack, but I do encourage other walkers to try both and then make the best decision for them as to what to carry for the event.  Practicing with your gear is important in preparing for the 3-Day!   I look forward to carrying my Camelbak another 60 miles in October.  Although, I may need someone else to check it before I put it on.  Yep, definitely a problem with the operator!! ;-)

Walking, Walking, and Walking Some More...

Training is so important in preparation for the 3-Day!  How could you ever think of walking 60 miles without practicing it?  This year, I was once again selected as a Training Walk Leader (TWL).   I have been blessed to walk with several ladies and gentlemen this year.  Meeting new people is the best part of being a training walk leader.  I love encouraging walkers and seeing the look on their faces when they complete a set number of miles.  The miles and time passes faster when walking with friends too!

The training plan for the 3 day totals over 500 miles.  That's not including the actual 60 miles in 3 days.  Due to life, I can't do it all.  But, I do what I can to prepare.  So far, as of today, I have completed over 220 training miles this year.  It's not easy, but the 3-Day Spirit shown by the 3-Day Family keeps you going all the way to the closing ceremony!  I am so excited to walk this year.  I am so excited to meet the new faces put in my path!  New faces to encourage, to support, and to show God's love to too.  Thanks to everyone for supporting me.  Thank you, God for allowing me this opportunity, the strength to walk, and for shining though me to help others.  I am so blessed by being a part of this team and being a small part to help find a cure to end cancer!!  I just want to make a difference in this world and I hope my life, my story, will give hope and strength to others.  I'll continue to walk, you keep walking too....

Help Me Make a Difference!!

In 9 weeks I will be taking my 3rd 60 mile journey in the 2013 Susan G. Komen 3-Day™! I had such an incredible experience the last 2 years participating in this event.  I'm so excited and blessed that I have the opportunity to share hope and spread awareness once again!  This event isn't easy, but I promise you, I wouldn't be doing it if I didn't believe 100% that it was worth every muscle ache, weary night, blister, and training walk!

However, I need your help in order to participate!  I must reach the minimum fundraising goal of $2,300.00 in order to walk.  I am currently only half way there at a little over $1000.  I am asking you to please consider giving a donation.  You may be thinking, "Why should I donate?" Without a cure, one in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. I bet that you know a friend or loved one that has battled or is now fighting this disease.  This is our opportunity to do something about it. Together, we can!  There is no donation too big or too small. Please also ask your employer if they will double your donation with a matching gift.  Remember that your donation is tax deductible.  Whether you donate $5 or $100 your gift is appreciated and a step closer to finding the cure!  If you are not able at this time to donate your prayers and support are enough!  You can also help by sharing my journey or asking others to donate to my account.  Thanks for all of your support and prayers. I'm incredibly lucky to have people like you in my life!

I need to reach my goal as soon as possible.  If I have not reached it by October then I will not be able to participate this year.  Please donate today!!  To make an online donation, click here!

May God Continue to Bless You!
With love,  Amy

Thank you!

Just wanted to say thanks to all those who have supported me and prayed for my journey.  I am so looking forward to October and know that God is blessing all my efforts!  I hope that those reading my story are receiving a blessing.  I hope to write more soon as the event approaches.  However, I am only about half way there on my fundraising.  I plan on a few more fundraisers soon.  You can check back to see what I'm selling or you can go to my page here and make an online donation or print a donation form.  If you know of a business or someone who may want to donate send them a link to my page.  Remember all donations are tax deductible.  Don't forget to let me know if you have a friend or loved one that you want me to walk in memory or in honor of.  I carry each name on a ribbon throughout the entire 60 miles!

This year's 3-Day is only 9 weeks away!  I'm getting excited!!!

Lockets of Love

One thing can't talk about enough is the support system from the 3-Day.  When you sign up to walk you are given a wealth of information.  Information on how to train, how to fundraise, what to expect on event, and so much more.  You are given a personal fundraising website with easy to follow steps on how to create it.  You are given contact information on how to contact 3-Day coaches by email and phone.  You are never alone on the 3-Day!  One thing I have never really got involved with until this year was the 3-Day Message Board.  It alone is a wealth of information and support in itself.  I have made contact with many new walkers and veteran walkers too.  There are so many more ideas on training and fundraising and people offering to help people (and that's what I love so much about the 3-Day community!).

In looking at fundraising ideas, I came across a fellow 3-Day walker/crew member from Arizona, Marci.  She is a designer with the direct sales company Origami Owl.  This was a company that was new to me, but after looking at her website I totally fell in love with these lockets.  This company was started in 2010 by a 14 year old girl (amazing - aren't you loving it already!).  The company's mission is "To be a force for good; to love, inspire and motivate women of all ages to reach their dreams and empower them to make a difference in the lives of others."  Wow...and just look at the example lockets above...I don't know about you, but I love all 5!!

The greatest thing about these lockets is that they are customizable.  You create your own locket and you can always add to it later.  I love how they say "Every Locket Tells a Story."  What's your story?  Wouldn't you love to wear it?  I know I would.  So, after seeing these and finding out what the company was all about, I decided that this would make a great Mother's Day Gift for me (Hint, hint, to my husband and children).  The lockets are reasonably priced too.  You can make it as expensive or inexpensive as you want since you are the designer!

I also wanted to share these lockets with you!  Marci is holding a jewelry bar for me (like a home show).  You can see me for a catalog, come to my jewelry bar, or order online.  In turn for ordering a locket, Marci will donate back to my 3-Day for the Cure Account!  As I said above these lockets would make great Mother's Day gifts, Birthday gifts, or Graduation presents!

Here's how to order...

Contact me about a catalog or the jewelry bar.

Order online ***It is important that you follow the steps below to order online so that it will count towards my party!  If you don't follow the steps, your purchase will just be added to the general account.

Blessings and Hope, Everyone Needs a Little...

Today I am just reflecting on how blessed I have been by being part of the 3-Day Family.  The people involved in the 3-Day are truly amazing.  Working together for one common goal - an end to breast cancer.  During my first walk, I had so many fears.  Fear that I wouldn't be able to raise the money, fear that I wouldn't be able to walk the 60 miles, fear that I would let my donors down and the those whose memory and honor I walked for down.  I prayed and turned it all over to God, saying "Lord if you want me to do this, then I know you will make a way."  Surprisingly, the money came easily that year.  Training seemed to be going well with a few blisters here and there, right up to the time of the event.  Until my knee started to bother me.  I kept faith, prayed, remembered all the reasons why I was walking, and then I knew I could do it!  It was finally the day of the event...I was nervous and excited.  Though I was walking alone (I didn't have a team that year), I really wasn't alone at all.  I knew my heavenly father was right beside and thousands of friendly faces walked with me every step, pushing me and encouraging me to keep going.  Those 3 days are really indescribable.  I remember the feeling of accomplishment after the first day, how proud I was.  Then day 2 came and I thought, "I'll never do this again, it's too hard." Yep, that doubt crept right back in.  But, seeing my Mom, Husband, and boys gave me that little extra encouragement to keep me hobbling on to the finish line.  My knee was really bothering me that day.  I know the pain showed in my face and in my limp as many walkers and crew stopped me to ask if I was okay.  I pushed through day 2 and made it to camp.  I kept telling myself that my pain is nothing compared to the pain of a cancer patient.  At camp I was able to ice my knee and prop it up.  I read letters from friends and family, kind words of encouragement and scriptures.  I prayed and then got some much needed sleep and somehow woke up ready to conquer day 3.  Immediately, at the Closing Ceremony I knew that I would be back the next year!

Finish Line 2011

Year 2 was even more amazing!  I had an awesome team of 4, Angels of Hope.  This year, I still had some of those same fears and often thought "would I really be able to lead a team?"  Again, I turned it all over to God saying, "You blessed me so much last year by being able to walk for my Mom, I want to continue to honor her and make a difference for this cause and for your kingdom."  I have learned when you give, God blesses you even more than you can imagine.  Walking and raising some money, doesn't seem like much, but meeting His people and sharing His love and hope with the world makes it worth everything.  Year 2 was much easier training for me.  I was selected to be a training walk leader and felt like I was helping so many more people. Not just helping them prepare for 60 miles, but encouraging them and giving them hope.  Letting them know that this is something that they can accomplish and together we are making a difference.  Together we are helping to find the cure.  As for the money, we'll it didn't come as easily last year.  I was cutting it close, but God showed me again, that He's faithful and my team-mates met their goals as well.  We all made it 60 miles and I was even more proud this year than last to see the emotional tears stream down the faces of my team-mates as they crossed the finish line.

Finish Line 2012

Now, here I am year 3.  Still excited and just a little nervous.  However, I feel that this is something that God has called me to do.  Share hope with His people.  To share Momma's story, tell these incredible ladies, His children, that He loves them and that there is "still life after breast cancer."  Tell them they are not alone.  Today, the 3-Day lost one of our own.  Bridget Spence, a 3-Day coach from Boston went home to meet our Heavenly Father.  She was an amazing women who gave her all to make many aware and pushed to help fund research.  I really don't think she knew how many lives she had touched.  I did not know her personally, but I have cried through hearing her story many times.  A story of faith, hope, and love.  A story of a fighter right down till the end.  My prayers go out to her family today.  She is just another reason to continue this journey.  To continue to put faith and trust in God because in His time He will lead us to the cure.  This year, I have a few less fears.  This year is about helping even more women. Helping them see that this is something that they can accomplish.  I have so enjoyed talking and emailing other ladies interested in the event.  I love hearing their stories and seeing their determination as they walk.  I am looking forward to the training walks, the laughs, and even the tears.  Again, I am nervous about the monetary commitment, but I am placing it in the Lords hand, knowing that He supplies all our needs.  Fear won't stop me, God is on my side!

This October, Angels of Hope will walk.  We will walk to remember and honor the lives of many and share hope along the way.  As of today, there are 10 amazing women on team Angels of Hope.  As of today, we are ranked #3 in the Top Ten Atlanta Teams.  What an honor!  My prayer today is, "Dear Lord, help us make a difference.  Help us share Your Hope!  May we bless all that we come in contact with for your glory!"

I am so blessed!  Blessed to have an amazing mother, father, husband, and sons, blessed to be aware, blessed to be able to help others.  Blessed to be on an amazing team.  Most of all I am blessed to have a Heavenly Father that loves me and cares for me even though I don't deserve it.  He doesn't want us to fear or worry.  He is with us.  We must put our trust in Him.  Friends, don't let fear stop you, reach out to those around you today!  Share God's love and hope, and be a blessing to those in need because "everyone needs a little!"

"Come all ye weary and ye broken. Come to the table of the Lord.
Come sing the song of the forgiven. Come lay your burden on the word. Come and find peace.
Everyone needs a little rest, everyone needs a little joy, and a song to sing in the darkest night.
Life, even when it gets you down, hope will turn it all around, but love is the greatest of these.
Everyone needs a little!" Kari Jobe

Yep, I'm walking again!!

Dear Friends and Family,

Yes, I'm doing it again - I signed up for the 2013 Susan G. Komen 3-Day™! I had such an incredible experience doing the 3-Day for the cure for the last 2 years that I'm going back for a 3rd 60 Mile Journey. I'm so excited about this event and I am blessed that I have the opportunity to share hope and spread awareness!

Just in case you missed my account of last year's event, follow the link below to visit my personal webpage, where I tell my story or visit my blog at www.amys3dayjourney.blogspot.com. This event isn't easy, but I promise you, I wouldn't be doing it if I didn't believe 100% that it was worth every muscle ache, weary night, blister, and training walk!

I need your help of reaching my $2,300.00 fundraising goal that you - my friends and family - gave so generously last time around to help end breast cancer.

In 2011, I joined the 3-Day family to honor and celebrate the life of my mother, Debbie Sauls. She has just celebrated her 27th year of winning her battle with breast cancer. I walk for many others too, honoring or remembering them. You can see the growing list of names of people I walk for on my fundraising page or my blog. Each one is special to me or a friend of mine who asked me to walk on their behalf.  I would be glad to add your loved one to my list.  Please email me their name.  I will also add a ribbon to my gear and wear their name during the 3-Day event.

This year, my team, Angels of Hope, is back as well!!  We will walk in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day™, in Atlanta on October 18-20, 2013 and I'm hoping you'll join us.  We'll be walking 60 scenic miles over three beautiful and uplifting days to help fund breast cancer research and community programs. Last year, team Angels of Hope raised over $12,000!!  With your help, there's no limit on how much we can raise!

You may be thinking, "Why should I walk or donate?" More importantly, why shouldn't you? Without a cure, one in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. This is our opportunity to do something about it. Together, we can!

Let's get started today. To register, go to The3Day.org or call 800-996-3DAY. Or visit my team webpage. Use the code 3DAY25 to get a discount on online registration. If you would like, I'll attend a "Get Started Meeting" with you. There are several going on around Atlanta right now.

Can't walk 60 miles? Then support us with your prayers or make a tax deductible donation. Visit my personal fundraising webpage to make a donation to me or someone one my team.  Special thanks to those who have already contributed this year!!

Please consider making a donation. There is no donation too big or too small. If you can't give all at once, you can spread it out over four months, using the payment plan option if you donate online at The3Day.org.  Please also ask your employer if they will double your donation with a matching gift.  Remember that your donation is tax deductible.  Whether you donate $5 or $100 your gift is appreciated and a step closer to finding the cure!  If you are not able at this time to donate your prayers and support are enough!  You can also help by sharing my journey.  To donate click here!

If you have any questions or want to hear more about what I'm doing, give me a call or send me an email, I love talking about the event. Thanks for all of your support and prayers. I'm incredibly lucky to have people like you in my life!

Thank you all for your love and support!

Love,
Amy S. Rains

P.S. Don't wait - donate today!  Everyone Deserves A Lifetime!

2012 3-Day Atlanta

“Once you choose hope, anything's possible.” ~Christopher Reeve

Team Angels of Hope

Well the 2012 3-Day has come and gone and it's been so long since I have posted. Life has been so busy...it's hard to try to find the time to write down all I have to say. The 3-Day for the Cure is such an amazing journey and I have enjoyed very step! I am blessed that God has given me this opportunity and a passion to spread His love, hope, and awareness to others through this cause.  Above you will see a picture of my amazing team-mates...Team Angels of Hope!  We all walked 60 Miles through Atlanta on October 19-21, and had a wonderful time.  With help and prayers from friends and family like you, our team raised over $12,000 for research and breast awareness programs.  I could have never dreamed that my solo journey two years ago would lead to this.  It is my prayer that God blesses the money raised and it goes to those who need it and to getting us closer to that cure that He will reveal in His time.  I just get so excited thinking about the 3-Day!  It excites me to be with the people!  It truly is a community of Hope and Kindness!  Being a part of it blesses me more than I could ever tell you in words.  It's an amazing feeling to serve others and to feel that you are a small part of something that is changing the world!

I will try to take you through the 3 days in pictures....

I began the journey a day early at Stone Mountain park.  I was honored to have been selected to carry a honor flag in both the Opening and Closing Ceremony.  The pictures above and below were taken at set up and rehearsal.

I was so excited the morning of the walk.  Emily rode with me and my family.  We meant Natalie at Opening Ceremony and later met up with Brenda and Judy.  We met so many people!!  I was so excited to meet and talk with Dr. Sherri!!  She is the National Spokeswomen for the SGK 3-Day for the Cure.  One truly inspiring woman!

Above is the sign in sheet!!  Yep, there's my name near the top!!  The flag that I was chosen to carry was the honor flag for the children.

Opening Ceremony was inspirational and amazing as always.  It was even more special to me this year since I was in it and both my mom, dad, my husband, and sons were there.  Having the team and leading them onto the route was so exciting.  Walking with friends and making new ones on the journey too made it a little more easier this year.  Last year, as I walked I longed for each cheering station because I needed to see my family for a boost to keep me going.  This year, I had the energy of my team the entire route and my family at the cheering stations.  I have to thank you, for your prayers and support too!  Knowing I had friends and family praying for my every step kept me going!  I loved getting your encouragement from Facebook too.  Thanks for the posts and likes!!

“The longest journey begins with a single step.” ~ Lao Tsu

I just love these girls!!  Me, Emily, & Natalie
Pit Stop #1 was a little over 3 miles into Day 1 and the first cheering station was right outside of the Stone Mountain Park.  Pit Stops are where you can stop, go to the restroom, have a snack, stretch, fill up on water, and get medical attention if needed.  The Pit Stops all have fun themes and the first one was a Fire Station.  At Pit 1 we met up with Brenda....well she found us because of my wings!  ;)  She also introduced us to Judy and her tent-mate Su who became honorary angels on our team!

“The sum of the whole is this: walk and be happy; walk and be healthy. The best way to lengthen out our days is to walk steadily and with a purpose.”  ~ Charles Dickens
I love you, Mom!
Before we knew it 20 miles was done and we were at camp setting up and decorating our tents.

Well, there it is (above)!  Our home-away-from-home for 2 nights anyway.  The past two years, camp has been in the Georgia World Congress Center.  You may wonder about the floor....well, after 20 miles a day you just want to rest, it doesn't matter how you rest, ha ha!  If you notice inside the tent we had an air mattress.  Last year, I had a sleeping bag and pad.  I recommend the air mattress!!  We decorated our tents with our angel wings and photo's of our loved ones, both friends and family.

On to Day 2!

To me, Day 2 is the hardest.  It's long, you don't get to your first cheering station till after lunch, and did I say it was a long?  Again, it was much easier this year sharing the experience with friends!

The morning are always cold and by the last cheering station we were handing Mom jackets and shirts.  It's always best to layer during the 3-Day!

“He who limps is still walking.”  ~ Joan Rivers

Last year at this cheering station I was in tears fearful that I would not be able to finish!  This year, I was feeling great!  Here's a picture of the team with Momma!  This is my boy's favorite cheering stations because it's next to Five Guys Burgers and Fries.  Of course they ate there while they waited on us!  Again, sharing the journey with friends blessed me so much more than you will ever know.  I was selected to be a training walk leader this year and I met so many people on training walks.  It was fun to see them along the route too.  Everyone encourages each other and pushes each other to finish!

And then...40 miles was over!  Last year, at this time I could hardly move, had a sore knee, and had many many blisters on my feet.  This year, I was so much better prepared and better in shape.  I finished with only one small blister this year!  The soreness was still there....hey, you would be sore too after walking that long of a distance.  But, again, it's all worth it to make people aware and in turn save lives and share hope.

At camp we have a camp post office.  I love to receive mail from all of you.  It is great to read those encouraging words at the end of a long day and be reminded why I walk.  This year was extra special as Mrs. Jones' 3rd grade class wrote me post cards.  I am so grateful to work at a wonderful school fill with amazing students and such a supportive staff!  Thank you to all who wrote me!!

And then it was Day 3!

A couple of my girls felt that this was the hardest day for them.  There was less talking and more focus on picking up each foot for every step.

Day 3 takes you through downtown Atlanta.  You walk past many historical sites.  It was also Worship in Pink Sunday in Atlanta so as many churches were dismissing you saw a lot of supporters in pink.  Day 3 is very emotional.  The last leg of the journey.  Your body is physically ready to see Turner Field, but emotionally you don't want it to end.  The last mile is the best!  I can't fully describe the feeling you get when you turn the corner and take your first steps on the bridge crossing I-20.  You see the Olympic Rings and the stadium in the back ground.  Your eyes feel with tears of pride as you start to realize, yes, you just completed 60 miles.  Yes, you raised a whole lot of money.  Yes, there are so many kind and supportive people who prayed and helped you reach these goals.  You remember why you are walking.  You remember those who have lost their battles and you push on for those like Momma who won and for those who will fight in the future.  Once you get to the Olympic Rings, it's just one big party!  People are dancing in the streets, cheering you on, offering water and snacks.  Simply Amazing!

Above is our tearful entrance to Turner Field.  Friends and family are allowed in the first gate, but we must cross into the stadium and only walkers and crew are allowed in.  Entering that gate you are greeted by Dr. Sherri, the crew, and walkers who arrived before you.  There are so many hugs, tears, and a great feeling of excitement and accomplishment.  They give you a rose and your completion t-shirt.  Then you prepare for the Closing Ceremony as you cheer in other walkers that come behind you.

Such a proud moment pictured above!  I am so proud of each person on my team for completing all 60 miles.  Doing something you never thought you would be able to do is so incredible!!  At Closing Ceremony walkers enter arm in arm in rows of 10 wide.  I was a bit sad that I could not walk arm in arm with my girls, but once again I got to carry the children flag.  This time my boys got to walk in with me and stand with me on the stage.  Wesley carried a pink poster that all my students had signed their names on.  So not only were my sons, Wesley and Graham with me, but my HMES Superstars were there in spirit!

Poor Graham was scared to death being on stage in front of so many people.  He was also sad because Memaw and Granddaddy would have to go home too.  He was happy that the stage manager gave him and key chain and then he asked me for keys to go on it!

As part of the Closing Ceremony walkers raise their shoes in honor of the survivors!  I have so many little stories I could share, just not enough time to write it all.  If you have never been a part of this event, you should.  You can walk, crew, cheer, donate...let me know and I be glad to get you information so that you can be involved.  Thanks again to all who made it possible for me to do this!!  Thanks to God for carrying me every step of the way!  Thanks to my husband and my boys for their love, support, and giving of their time too!

Thanks to my Mom and Dad for teaching me to serve God and others, for their love and their prayers.

Now it's on to 2013!  What can I say?  My 3-Day Journey has turned into a 3-Year Journey!  Thanks again for your love and support.

And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walkin love. 2 John 1:6
